Iris

In Greek mythology Iris is the goddess of the rainbow.
The Greek word Iris means rainbow, the flower blooms in a variety of brilliant colours hence its given name.
Ancient Egyptians had the Iris as a symbol of rebirth and identified the three leaves of the bloom as symbols of wisdom, valor and faith.

In the medieval ages the flower was linked with French monarchy. It became known as the Fleur de lys (Flower of the Lily) and became the national symbol of France.

Today the Iris is the state flower of Tennessee.
Even though the Iris (Fleur de lys) was popular in New Orleans before the devastation of Hurrican Katrina 2005, after the storm the emblem became the symbol of the city.
