The Winged Lion of Venice

The Winged Lion is the traditional symbol of Venice.
It is the symbol of Mark the Evangelist, (The apostle).
St. Mark has been the city's patron saint since his remains were taken from a tomb in Alexandria, Egypt, and bought to Venice in 828AD.
The Lion of Venice is usually represented with its paw on an open book that has the text,
"Pax tibi, Marce, Evangelista meus".
This is Latin, meaning, "Peace be upon you, O Mark, my Evangelist".
The Winged Lion can be seen everywhere in Venice.
