Pierre-Paul Riquet (Baron de Bonrepos) was born in Beziers Herault France 1609, some information records state that he was born in 1604. He was a wealthy engineer with great vision.
He designed and constructed the Canal du Midi in the second half of the 17th century. He financed and dedicated his life to the project.
Louis XIV embraced the project because of the cost and danger of transporting cargo around southern Spain because of pirates.
The 240 kilometre canal linked the Gulf of Lyon (Mediterranean Sea) with the Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean). It was an engineering masterpiece.
There were plenty of engineering problems and challenges, water management to supply water at the high levels of the canal, tunnels, bridges, 328 locks. But with his talent and vision the problems were solved.
The Canal du Midi is the oldest working canal in Europe.
Pierre-Paul Riquet did not see his project completed, He died 1st October 1680, 8 months before it was finished. The Canal was officially opened in 1681.
He is buried in the Cathedral Saint-Etienne in Toulouse.

Il est enterré dans la cathédrale Saint-Etienne à Toulouse.
